At this point, everyone knows of the disaster and devastation that has resulted from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. As cathartic as it might be for me to expound on my disappointment in BP, in our government's confused response, and in the general lack of any sort of solution, I know that would not be adding anything to the multitudes of conversations that already exist on the subject. Suffice it to say, my heart truly breaks for all beings impacted by this disaster -- and that is all of us.
In my search to gain an understanding of the situation and what can be done about it, I came across a interesting HuffingtonPost article by Sarah Jawaid (via the very informative
Facebook Page for
Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet). While I do not personally identify as Muslim, I found my own sentiments echoed by Jawaid's words and her position from the beginning of the piece to it's compelling conclusion.
"It all comes down to choice. Will we opt to feel connected and whole with the world around us? Or will be select a path void of thought, reflection, and spirituality? If we don't shed greed and apathy, not only is the Earth at stake but so is our well-being."
For a fresh and informative perspective on the situation that we are all in, I recommend reading the entire article, "
Islam and the Spiritual Malaise of the Oil Spill."
As always, I welcome your thoughts on the piece or on the BP disaster, in general.
