Berrett-Koehler Community

Creating a World That Works for All

This is a place to just let everyone else in the BK community know what's on your mind today.  Go ahead, be spontaneous.  What are you thinking or feeling today?  Excited, worried, happy, sad?   Go ahead and share.

Health care reform for the United States is on my mind today. Whether you are for it, against it, or somewhere in between, I think we can all agree it was an historic day on Sunday, March 21, 2010, in the House of Representatives.
I am thinking about the Mighty Gaels of Saint Mary's college in tiny Moraga, California today. The big California basketball Goliaths (Cal Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford) have now fallen but the little David of Saint Mary's (rechristened "Gael-iath") remains standing in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament. Awesome!
I'm thinking about social networking, but what else is new! More specifically -- book-related Facebook and Twitter Applications. What is the best way to balance marketing of said book (it's important!) and added value to customers/users? How can we have the most fun?? Looking into it!
I am thinking about the iPad today. Can't wait to see it and handle it.
I am thinking about writing my first post about digital publishing on a new BKcommunity group I'll be starting this week called "Digital Publishing - What Does It Mean for All of Us?". So many exciting things happening in the world of e-publishing these days. It affects readers, writers, editors, book cover and interior designers, warehouse personnel, retailers--the list goes on and on. Hopefully we can get many different perspectives.
Frankly, e-books scare me. I mean, yes, it's really exciting to be alive when an entire industry changes so radically, but also scary. Sometimes, in my mind, I think of the opening credits from the original Star Trek series (re-worded for this scenario):

"E-books, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the publisher Berrett-Koehler -- its continuing mission: to explore new digital domains, seek out new products and technology, to boldly go where no publisher has gone before..."

Then I start assigning character personalities to staff members and it gets rather strange.
Today (5-5-10) the fun begins; we are inviting current members to join ongoing conversations. Click on the Groups tab to see what's up. Later this week we will invite 50 more BK stakeholders to join.
You know, I can't get that stupid "Field of Dreams" movie out of my head when I think about this BK Community going live. You know the line -- "If you build it, they will come." So you built this community, and I'm hoping they will come!
Hey Jeevan,
Well, YOU came and that's worth the price of admission alone in my eyes. I love reading your posts!
Thanks, Amy. And yes, I came, but I would do anything for David and Bonnie. I'm their biggest fan!
